Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems, most commonly, dental cavities, gingivitis, periodontal (gum) diseases and bad breath.

Did you know that children’s teeth begin forming before birth?

As early as four months, the first primary, or baby, teeth, erupt through the gums. Knowing that, when is the best time to get the dentist involved? The answer is as soon as the first tooth appears. At this time, begin brushing your child’s teeth daily and schedule a dental appointment. In most cases, children should visit the dentist by their first birthday.

Tooth Brushing Technique:

  • Always use a soft tooth brush, your tooth brush should be changed every 3 months
  • Use a fluoride tooth paste, this applies for all adults and children form the age of 6 years old (this is the age that children usually understand that they should spit the tooth paste out and they are not allowed to swallow it)
  • Brush twice daily
  • Don’t apply excessive pressure

Flossing Technique:

  • Take a decent amount of floss and hold it tightly,
  • When guiding the floss it should be done in a see-saw motion.
  • Never insert the floss in with an up or down motion, as you might put too much pressure and the floss goes too far in the gum line and cause trauma to the gum and results in pockets which can lead to gum disease.
  • When the floss is in-between the teeth, gently scrape each tooth using an up and down motion being carful again not to push the floss in the gum too hard.
